Copy Editor(Spanish), Scholastic Corp.

The Opportunity:

  • Proofread bilingual and Spanish-language children’s books, instructional guides, marketing content, and research materials (can include cold read of layout or manuscript, detailed skim of materials, checking copy against manuscript, confirming corrections, reviewing printer proofs, reviewing samples, and proofreading and marking PDFs)
  • As needed, translate content from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
  • As needed, work with editors and the Proofreading Manger to revise and craft a limited amount of Spanish-language content.
  • Perform content QA of digital components, such as ebooks, online assessments, digital teaching systems, audio/video clips, and programs adapted for use on tablets
  • Enter text and note corrections for format/design in Adobe InCopy, proprietary digital editing tools, Microsoft Office, and other software
  • Editorial support, such as checking content across documents, as requested
  • Assist with onboarding and mentoring of new in-house proofreaders in concert with the Proofreading Manager

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of relevant proofreading, copyediting, or editing experience, preferably for audiences that include children, educators, and parents
  • Excellent knowledge of the Spanish language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and nuance, as well as a high-level of English-language (writing and speech) skills
  • Strong attention to detail and tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (flexible; can train if needed) or other commonly used styles, such as AP and APA
  • Experience with on-screen proofreading and Adobe InCopy desired
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and ask relevant questions
