Join the Children's Media Association for our biggest event of the year....the Red Chair Series! The Red Chair Series features intimate conversations with the powerhouses of the children’s media business. The event’s unique interview format looks at life, work, and the intersection between the two, providing Children's Media Association members direct access to the movers and shakers of the children’s business.

This year our long time friend, CMA Board Advisor and Red Chair host Amy Friedman sits downs in her iconic red chairs across from Executive Vice President and Creative Director at Sesame Workshop, Brown Johnson! Brown is responsible for the development and production of the Workshop’s domestic television content. Before Sesame, she pioneered the interactive format of the groundbreaking preschool programs Dora the Explorer and Blue’s Clues and oversaw the development of the Nickelodeon preschool block featuring hit shows including Go Diego Go!, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Team UmiZoomi, The Backyardigans, and Ni Hao Kai Lan. About our Speakers

Brown Johnson is the Executive Vice President and Creative Director at Sesame Workshop. Johnson is responsible for the development and production of the Workshop’s domestic television content, as well as Education and Creative Services. Johnson is an award-winning producer of some of the most successful children’s programs. She pioneered the interactive format of the groundbreaking preschool programs Dora the Explorer and Blue’s Clues. She also conceived and oversaw the development of the Nickelodeon preschool block featuring hit shows including Go Diego Go!, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Team UmiZoomi, The Backyardigans, and Ni Hao Kai Lan. Johnson led the creative development to extend the preschool block online and through retail. Many of the programs she created and managed showcase characters of diverse ethnicities. Her focus on the development of multi-ethnic children’s media spurred Johnson to create fellowships in writing and animation designed to grow the next generation of diverse creators. Before joining the Workshop, she served as President of Animation and Preschool Entertainment at Nickelodeon, where she managed development and production of more than 200 episodes of programming each year. In Johnson’s more than 20 years with Nickelodeon, she received multiple Emmy Awards, Television Critics Awards, 3 Peabody Awards, Imagen, and NAACP Image Awards. Johnson serves on the advisory board of Peter Gabriel’s WITNESS foundation, the board of governors of the We Are Family Foundation, the Ambassador Council of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and is a graduate student mentor for the USC John C. Hensch Division of Animation and Digital Arts. Johnson resides in New York and has one daughter.

 

Amy Friedman is the Founder and President of Redhead Consulting, a brand creation and content development company across all media, with a focus on kids, teens and families. Most recently, Amy served as the Senior Vice President of Programming & Development for NBCU Sprout and its’ 2017 rebrand to Universal Kids. While there, Amy oversaw the animated and live action Originals slate kids 2-5 and 6-12, including Top Chef Junior, Beat The Clock, The Big Fun Crafty Show, Sprout House, and many others. As a member of the Universal Kids executive team, Friedman contributed to the overall strategic direction of the brand and business. Prior to Universal Kids, Friedman served as Senior Advisor for Scratch, Viacom’s creative and strategic S.W.A.T. team, partnering with clients such as Pepsi, General Motors, The Public Theatre, the Guggenheim Museum, and The Malala Foundation. A veteran of the kids’ media business, Friedman has held senior management positions across all of the Nickelodeon networks, including Nick, Noggin, and TeenNick. In her role as Senior Vice President of Original Programming/Creative Director, she was responsible for steering both Noggin and TeenNick’s original brand strategy, on-air identity, educational mission, and the development and production of its Original programming. Friedman was the founding Creative Director/Executive Producer of Nickelodeon’s Creative Lab, the network’s award winning experimental short form department, and began her career mixing slime on the original Double Dare in 1987. Friedman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she concurrently earned a B.A. degree in American Civilization and an M. A. degree in Education. She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Children’s Media Association, The Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, and was a founding advisor to CityKids. She and her husband live in Montclair, New Jersey with their two teenage daughters.
