Filling the White Space in Children's Media

Join those on the forefront of all that is new in children’s content. This panel of experts assembled by CMA and Sesame Workshop will discuss what white space means to them and where professionals in children’s content should focus in terms of digital distribution and content creation. The panel will be moderated by industry expert (and CMA Board Advisor), David Kleeman.

About Your Host

Strategist, analyst, author, speaker, connector, David Kleeman has led the children’s media industry in developing sustainable, child-friendly practices for more than 35 years. He began this work as president of the American Center for Children and Media and is now Senior Vice President of Global Trends for Dubit, a strategy/research consultancy and digital studio. When he began, “children’s media” meant television. Today, he is fascinated by, and passionate about, kids’ wide range of possibilities for entertainment, engagement, play and learning. David uses research, insights and experience to show that much may change, but children’s developmental path and needs remain constant. David is advisory board chair to the international children’s TV festival Prix Jeunesse and on the Board of the 2021 World Summit on Media for Children in Dublin, Ireland. He’s also on Boards for the National Association for Media Literacy Education and the Children’s Media Association. David travels worldwide seeking best practices in children’s entertainment and learning. He has spoken (and, more importantly, listened!) on six continents and writes extensively for varied audiences.

Kim Diaz, Director of Production & Development at Sesame Workshop, has spent the past 13+ years in preschool television as a producer, development exec, writer, and (occasional) performer. In her current role, Kim oversees Sesame’s Creative Development pipeline, which includes original series, Sesame Street spinoffs, and animated specials for partners such as HBO Max and Apple TV+. She also runs shorts production and development for the Sesame Studios YouTube channel.  Her award-winning work for Nick Jr, Sprout, and Sesame Workshop has also been nominated for 5 Daytime Emmys and has been featured in children’s film festivals across the globe. Kim lives in Queens with her husband and two children.

 

 

Azadeh (Azi) Jamalian, PhD, is the founder of The GIANT Room - family innovation hubs for kids ages 2 to 12 years-old, and their caregivers. She is a TED resident and speaker, former Head of Education Strategy at littleBits, and co-founder of Tiggly, an award-winning learning company based in NYC. Azadeh has a PhD in Cognitive Studies in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and has published journal articles and book chapters on a broad range of topics such as designing learning platforms for children, emerging educational technology, game design, mathematical education, and cognition. Dr. Jamalian has received numerous awards including “IES Prize for Excellence in Research on Cognition and Student Learning,” and “The Cooney Center’s Certificate of Innovation in Children’s Learning.”

 

Vera Verba is the YouTube Manager at Sesame Workshop, specializing in content programming and strategy. She has been at Sesame Workshop for over five years, where she’s done everything from copywriting to show programming. Vera has managed operations for the Sesame Street YouTube channel since 2017, driving its growth from 3 million subscribers, to over 12 million. Her passion for creating quality educational preschool content has earned her several Telly Awards, including “I Love Trash Animated Lyric Video” and “Cookie Shark.” In addition to pitching and producing original digital content, she also heads up strategic digital partnerships and collaborations. In her free time, she studies and practices Argentine Tango.
